Track Team Hits Stride at TCNJ Invitational

Ewing, N.J. - The men's and women's outdoor track & field teams competed in the TCNJ Lions Invitational this past weekend at the College of New Jersey. There were 40 teams including many Division I and II teams in attendance.

MEN

Starting the day was sophomore thrower Michael Sanders (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) who threw his career best in the javelin with a distance of 38.34m (125-09.00)

Sophomore Rich Schimmel (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) ran his season best in the 5k in 17:32.63.

Sophomore Kevin Sanders (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) ran a season best in the 1500m with a time of 4:28.99, which was 11 seconds faster than his previous race last week.

Freshman Mario Mayen (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) had an impressive day as he took third in the 400m, running a career best and ECAC qualifying time of 49.32. Later, Mayen took sixth in the 400 hurdles, bettering his school record to 56.44.

Junior Brian Wersan (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) ran his second fastest time in his 800m career, crossing the finish line in 1:56.70. This time breaks his previous school record.

Freshman Alejandro Morales (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) competed in the shotput, breaking his school record with a toss of 10.97m (36-00.00).

WOMEN

Freshman Brittany Guttieri (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) continues to excel in the 1500m as she ran a career best of 4:55.16, breaking her previous school record by six seconds.

Freshman Samantha Maurice (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) ran a career best in the 400 hurdles in 1:10.55, which breaks the previous school record by three seconds.

Freshman Samantha Baculy (Farmingville, N.Y./Connetquot) ran a career best in the 400 hurdles in 1:19.70.

Junior Jessica Josema (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) ran her season best in the 400m in 1:01.44.

Sophomore Nicole Salvador (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) ran her personal best in the 200m with a time of 34.99.

The Golden Eagles close out their regular season next weekend as they travel to Rowan University to compete at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships. Competition is slated to begin on Saturday, May 4 at 12:00 p.m. and conclude Sunday, May 5.
