Track & Field Hits Three States for Whirlwind Weekend

Ewing, N.J. – The St. Joseph's College track and field team had an extremely busy this weekend running between three different events in three different states on three consecutive days. They started out in Pennsylvania at the prestigious Penn Relays, then off to New Jersey for the College of New Jersey's Lions Invitational and then returning home to Long Island to host the St. Joseph's Last Chance Meet.

At the Lions Invitational on Saturday, Mario Mayen finished below 49 seconds in 400m for the first time in his career and broke his own school record with a time of 48.74.  Mayen won the 400m improving on his ECAC qualifying time.

Ashley Arquer broke her 100m and 200m records with times of 12.79 and 26.62 and was also part of the 4x100 m relay team of Kelly Ingarra, Amanda Sprague, and Kristina Schrepf that broke a six-year old SJC school record with a time of 54.00.  The 4x100m relay team took 8th, as did Arquer in the 100m.

Schrepf and Sprague teamed with Samantha Maurice and Kelly Roberts to break the school record in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:26.77.

Penn Relays

On Friday at the Penn Relays, the 4x400m team put up its best time of season (3:31.95) on a very cold and windy day.  Brian Frejka split 53.3, Mike O'Shea 55.0, Mario Mayen 49.6, and Kevin Sanders, in his final Penn Relays, anchored in 52.9.

They finished in the top four of NJAC teams and 61st out of 67 total teams in the men's open 4x400m.

St. Joseph's Last Chance Meet

Despite a long day at TCNJ the day before, the Golden Eagles found success and found a handful of both Danzi Stadium records and meet records.  With a time of 49.61, Mayen set a meet and Danzi Stadium record for the 400m, while Nick Morfesi set a meet record by winning the 5000m with a time of 17.14.39.

The women clinched some positive results as well, by impressively breaking another three records.  AnnMarie Zigrosser set a meet and stadium record topped off by a win in the women's 5000m.  Cassandra Costarelli set a meet record in the 1500m with a time of 5.17.2 and Arquer broke yet another record, this time both meet and school for the long jump, with a distance of 4.98m.

Both the men's and women's 4x800m relay teams set meet and stadium records as well and look to bring this positive momentum into their final team outing on Saturday, May 2 at the NJAC Championships in Mahwah, N. J.
