Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team (17-5, 6-2 Skyline) swept the Skyline Tri-Match at the Riesenberg Gym of SUNY Maritime. The women beat both the Privateers of Maritime (1-19, Skyline 1-8) and Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent (10-12, Skyline 4-5) with scores of 3-0 in each match. The wins vault the Eagles into third place in the conference as the Skyline Conference Tournament draws near.
The Lady Eagles started the day off with a quick win over the Dolphins in straight games, 25-21, 25-15, and 25-13. Freshman Tiffany Willms (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) led all players with 16 points and 12 kills. Co-captain Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had another great game with 26 assists and 16 digs. Ashley Larrea (Islip, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) and Samantha Jacoby (Oakdale, N.Y. / Connetquot) provided strong defense with 17 and 14 digs, respectively.
St. Joseph's then dominated the Privateers with scores of 25-13, 25-11, and 25-8. Julianne Tierney showed she's not just a setter by having 10 kills on 14 attacks to go along with 21 assists. Sophomore Manuela Palacio (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) had nine points on seven kills while junior Kimberly Bolta (Bayshore, N.Y. / Bayshore) held down the back row with 11 digs.
The next match for the team is against conference rival Farmingdale St. (10-9, 4-3 Skyline). The Lady Eagles have secured a first round home match for the Skyline Conference Tournament on October 31, but a win would secure the third seed and a potential matchup against Mount Saint Vincent in the first round. Last season St. Joseph's defeated the Rams 3-1 at Farmingdale.
