Volleyball Falls to Merchant Marine but Blanks Poly for Skyline Win

Patchogue, N.Y. – The Golden Eagles (9-6) bounced back from a 3-1 loss to Merchant Marine (10-3) by sweeping Polytechnic (1-7) in Saturday's tri-match. Merchant Marine finished the day undefeated.

Game one against Merchant Marine was a back and forth battle. The Golden Eagles were down as many as four but they kept fighting. With their backs up against the wall, down 24-22, the Eagles scored two straight points. USMMA would serve for game point for the second time in the game but St. Joseph's were resilient. The Golden Eagles tied the game then took a 26-25 lead, but they would not be able to close the door as Samantha Jacoby's service error (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) would once again even the score. Merchant Marine put the game away with two straight kills.

The Eagles would not let the second game end the same way. The game was tied at 18 when the Eagles went on a 7-1 run to tie the match up at one. Despite the tight contests in the first two, games three and four were dominated by USMMA. Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) led the Eagles with 32 assists, while Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./Centereach) had 15 kills in the losing effort.

The Lady Golden Eagles went into the second match of the day feeling like they could have beaten Merchant Marine. They were out to prove themselves against Polytechnic in their first Skyline Conference match of the season. In the battle of the birds, the Golden Eagles outflew the Fighting Blue Jays 75-35 in the three matches. Julianne Tierney had another solid effort, posting 26 assists along with 15 digs.
