Eagles Volleyball Claws Baruch in First Home Match

Patchogue, N.Y. — The Lady Golden Eagles (4-1) defeated the Baruch Bearcats (1-4) in four sets last night, overcoming a rocky start and taking the non-conference victory with three consecutive set wins.

The Lady Bearcats came out strong, catching the Eagles off guard and stealing the first set 25-15 with ease. Catching their breath, SJC fired back in set two going on an eight-point run early, Samantha Jacoby's(Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) serves leading the charge. Baruch showed signs of life and brought the game within three, the score 22-19, but the Eagles' early lead secured them an ultimate 25-22 win.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early lead again in set three, creating a comfortable five-point buffer quickly at 14-9. The Bearcats kicked it in late again, going on a run fueled by their own offense and SJC errors, but the Golden Eagles pulled through with a 25-22 victory.

On a roll, SJC wasted no time in the fourth and final set to acquire an early lead. When the set drew close to its end at 19-17, the Eagles refused to give up any more points, scoring six consecutively and effectively winning the match three games to one. 

Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./ Centereach) slammed down 13 kills while her co-captain, Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), set up her teammates with 37 assists.  Courtney Wickline (Medford, N.Y./ Bellport) defended the back line with 16 digs.

The Lady Golden Eagles will host Lehman on Tuesday, September 9 for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
