Volleyball Upends Newbury Nighthawks 3-1

Patchogue, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College Golden Eagles (7-5) were victorious Friday night, soaring past the Newbury Nighthawks (6-6), 3-1, for the Eagle's seventh non-conference victory of the season.

The Lady Eagles were explosive entering the first set, scoring early and often. SJC pulled ahead to a comfortable 18-12 lead, before the Nighthawks reorganized and responded with a 5-0 run. Newbury's five-point run wasn't enough to topple the Eagles, who won the set 25-19. Although, the Nighthawks fell to the Eagles in the first set they were able to catch SJC in the second set winning, 25-20.

St. Joseph's College would go on to avenge their second set defeat by asserting their dominance in the third set. In the third, SJC accrued an early seven-point lead after taking advantage of multiple Newbury errors. The Lady Eagles rolled on to take the set easily, 25-17.

The fourth and final set was a close battle between both teams as they went back and forth for the first half of the set resulting in a 10-10 tie. The score remained close before the Golden Eagles started to pull away at the 16-14 mark. SJC finished the Nighthawks off by completing the set in a 25-18 victory.

SJC's Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./ Centereach) led the Golden Eagles with 16 kills; Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) added 33 assists while Courtney Wickline Medford, N.Y./ Bellport) protected the back line with 12 digs.

St. Joseph's remains home for a tri-match on Saturday against the College of Staten Island (5-4) at 10:00 a.m. following by a rematch versus Newbury College at 2:00 p.m.
