Senior Day Sweep for Volleyball in Last Home Match of Season

Patchogue, N.Y.—The Golden Eagles (17-10, SKY 6-1) played their last home game of the season on Thursday night at the Danzi Center, dominating the Yeshiva Maccabees (1-16, SKY 1-6) swiftly and skillfully in three sets. The night also served as the team's senior night, during which seniors Melissa Garibaldi (Seaford, N.Y./ Island Trees), Samantha Jacoby (Oakdale, N.Y./ Connetquot), Manuela Palacio (Islip, N.Y./ Islip) and captain Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./ Bethpage), were honored.

SJC's victory helped the Golden Eagle's effort to solidify the second seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament.

The first set went quickly with the Eagles' strong offense and solid defense, allowing Yeshiva to score only seven points in this first win.

In the second set Yeshiva showed glimpses of poise, starting the set with a 7-3 run. Perhaps distracted for a moment by the days' festivities, the Golden Eagles, still trailed the Maccabees 10-7 before the home team soon got back into their expert groove, finishing out the match strong, 25-16.  Senior outside hitter Samantha Jacoby helped turn the team's momentum by serving five aces in her 7-0 run that closed out the set.

The Golden Eagles wasted no time in the final set, running the score up with ease to 20-4 before Yeshiva knew what hit them. The set ended seven plays later, 25-6.

Jacoby had eight service aces and four kills over the course of the night, Palacio had five kills, Garibaldi had five kills and four service aces, and Tierney had 22 assists, three kills and two service aces. Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./ Centereach) chipped in with eight kills.  Courtney Wickline (Medford, N.Y. / Bellport) added nine digs.

The second place Golden Eagles will travel to Bronxville, N.Y., as the team will participate in a Skyline Conference tri-match against the Purchase Panthers (2-26, SKY 0-6) and the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons (2-20, SKY 0-6). SJC will begin their first contest against the Panthers at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. These will be their last two matches of the regular season before the postseason Skyline Conference Tournament.
