Women’s Volleyball Breezes Past Staten Island, 3-0

Patchogue, NY| Heather Ferchland had a game-high 13 kills and Courtney Bocchieri added 10 in the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's volleyball team's 3-0 romping of the College of Staten Island on Tuesday night inside the Danzi Center. With the victory the Golden Eagles now boast a .500 record at 8-8 (2-0 Skyline), while CSI falls to 5-6 (1-3 CUNYAC).

After a back-and-forth start to the first set that eventually saw the two sides tied at seven, St. Joseph's rallied for 10-straight points, with four off of Ferchland kills. CSI would break the slide with a point at 17-8, but the Golden Eagles would respond with the final eight tallies to claim the opener 25-8.

Set two was tighter, as the guests inched ahead with a 7-6 lead, but it was brief as St. Joseph's rallied for five straight to regain the lead. Later in the set, junior AnneMaire Taggart's service error allowed the Dolphins to tie the game, though it was fellow classman Claire Urizzo who notched the kill for the next point, which propelled the host's 9-3 run to wrap up the set 25-20.

The Golden Eagles scored the first four points of the third set, the last of which came courtesy of a service ace by sophomore Jessica Monteserrato. Senior Tiffany Willlms' service error minutes later would give the Dolphins a slim 6-5 lead, but St. Joseph's would rally, scoring points in bunches to build a steep 20-12 lead. CSI answered with a 10-4 run of their own, but, inevitably, the Golden Eagles captured the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.

Ferchland's 13 kills marked the ninth time this season that the senior has recorded double-digit kills in a single match, and for Bocchieri, her 10 kills were her highest tally since she recorded 12 against Yeshiva on September 20.

Junior Courtney Wickline and freshman Jenna Beekman also collected game-high totals, with the former leading the match in assists (22) and the latter in digs (13).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, September 3 when they play host to the College of Mount Saint Vincent and The Sage Colleges in a Skyline Conference tri-match. St. Joseph's will play in the 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM matches. Live stats will be available here.
