#3 Women’s Volleyball Tops #6 Maritime in Skyline First Round

Patchogue, NY| Senior Jessica Monteserrato starred as the third-seeded St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's volleyball defeated sixth-seeded SUNY Maritime, 3-0, in the first round of the Skyline Conference Championship tournament inside the Danzi Center on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Eagles, who improve to 15-13 on the year, advance to the semifinal round and face second-seeded U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY on Thursday evening.

Engaged early, SJC stormed to a 21-3 lead in the first set and eventually took the frame by a 25-8 scoreline.

Up 19-10 in the second, the Golden Eagles used a 6-1 run to earn a 25-11 win and pull ahead 2-0 in the match.

With their backs against the wall, the Privateers, down 15-11, compiled a 7-2 run to go up 18-17, but SJC countered with an 8-1 streak of its own to take the set, complete the sweep and end Maritime's season.

Monteserrato set the tone for the hosts, posting game-high figures in assists (22) and digs (10). The Bellmore, NY native also hit .714 in the match and was credited with seven kills.

Seniors Claire Urizzo and Morgan Tiska put down eight kills apiece and powered a balanced SJC attack.

The Golden Eagles' semifinal match at USMMA on Thursday begins at 7:00 pm. The winner advances to the final on Saturday, November 4 on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
