Wersan, Guttieri Continue to Lead Sky-High Eagles

Annandale, N.Y. — Both the men and women of the St. Joseph's College cross country program have been positively dominating the courses this season, their latest exploits being stellar times at the Bard College Invitational on Saturday.  Brian Wersan (Holbrook, N.Y./ Sachem North) earned his fourth Skyline Runner of the Week award this season while Nick Diaz (Hauppauge, N.Y./ Hauppauge) followed suit bringing home his fourth Skyline Rookie of the Week honor of his freshman season. Sophomore Golden Eagle runner Brittany Guttieri (Oakdale, N.Y./ Connetquot) earned a place on the Skyline Honor Roll for her 18:43 time and her 14th place overall finish out of a field of 175 competitors.

Wersan led the pack for SJC; with a time of 25:41, he was the eighth out of 187 runners to cross the finish line of the 8K course. Diaz and Jon Afanador (Medford, N.Y./ Patchogue-Medford) finished second and third, respectively, for SJC and 28th and 30th overall.  Out of 22 teams, the St. Joseph's College men finished third with 127 points bested only by Middlebury (15) and Cobleskill (62).

The Lady Golden Eagles came in second out of 16 teams with a smashing 72 points, bested only by Middlebury who finished with an unrivaled 15 points. Guttieri was the top runner for SJC followed closely by teammates Lauren Waka (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./ Lake Ronkonkoma) and AnnMarie Zigrosser (Bayport, N.Y./ St. John the Baptist) who finished 19th and 20th overall out of the 175 athletes on the course.

The team will next travel to the Bronx on September 29 to compete in the College of Staten Island Invitational, beginning at 11 a.m.
