Golden Eagles Fly Past Competition at Staten Island Invitational

Staten Island, N.Y. — Taking their usual spot atop the winner's podium, the St. Joseph's College cross country program dominated the 5K course at the College of Staten Island Invitational. The women's team blew away their competition earning a first place spot by a margin of over 100 points. The men also affirmed their prowess, placing second with a score of 73, bested only by USMMA (51).

The elite Lady Golden Eagles certainly commanded the pack of 162 Division III runners.  AnnMarie Zigrosser (Bayport, N.Y./ St. John the Baptist) led her team across the finish line with a time of 20:41, placing second overall. Zigrosser was followed closely by Katie Scharrenbrioch (Stony Brook, N.Y./ Ward Melville) who clocked in at 20:58 and earned third place overall. Brittany Guttueri (Oakdale, N.Y./ Connetquot) was the fifth finisher for the women with a time of 21:13.

Brian Wersan (Holbrook, N.Y./ Sachem North) led his squad across the finish line, placing fourth overall with a time of 16:52. Nick Diaz (Hauppauge, N.Y./ Hauppauge) was close on Wersan's heals, finishing among the top ten, in ninth place with a time of 17:35. Nick Morfesi (West Babylon, N.Y./ West Babylon) rounded out SJC's top three finishers, placing 16th with a time of 18:04.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Milton, N.Y. next Saturday to compete in the Mt. St. Mary Invitational.
