Women's Cross Country Flies Into First at Mt. St. Mary's Invitational

Milton, N.Y. — The Golden Eagles cross country program built upon their already stellar record at the Mt. St. Mary Invitational on Saturday. The women placed first out of 23 teams on the 5K course, beating out second place Cobleskill by an incredible margin of 73 points. The men also fared very well on their 8K course, placing seventh out of 21 teams, bested by only two Skyline Conference competitors out of the nine participating.

AnnMarie Zigrosser (Bayport, N.Y./ St. John the Baptist) blew away her competition, placing first out of 178 runners with a time of 20:26. Her teammate Lauren Waka (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./ Sachem North) was close on her heals, earning the second place spot with a time of 20:53. Katie Scharrenbroich (Stony Brook, N.Y./ Ward Melville) rounded out the top three SJC finishers with a fifth place finish and a time of 21:03.

For the men, Brian Wersan (Holbrook, N.Y./ Sachem North) was the first of his pack to cross the finish line as he was the third finisher overall (out of 141 runners) and the second Skyline competitor with a time of 28:39. Wersan was followed by teammate Nick Morfesi (West Babylon, N.Y./ West Babylon) who clocked in at 29:40, earning tenth place overall and fifth place out of all Skyline runners.

The Golden Eagles will host their annual St. Joseph's College Invitational on September 18 at Sunken Meadow Park in Kings Park, N.Y. The meet will begin at 12:00 p.m.
