SJC Athletics Department Introduces Golden Eagles Life Skills Program

Patchogue, NY| St. Joseph’s College (L.I.) Assistant Vice President & Senior Director of Athletics & Recreation Shantey Hill is proud to introduce the Golden Eagles Life Skills Program, an initiative to help prepare the college’s senior student-athletes prepare for the professional workplace.

“This program has been established to help our seniors transfer the skills they have developed as athletes into real-life, professional skills,” said Hill of the program, which will host its first event on Thursday, October 8.

Through the program, senior student-athletes will learn financial management skills, interviewing skills, proper business etiquette, and receive instructions on how to draft resumes and cover letters. Through these informative meetings, the department is fulfilling its promise to produce not only strong student-athletes, but practical, real-world leaders.

To achieve this, Hill has enlisted the help of prominent local figures, such as Theresa A. Regante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island, who will address St. Joseph’s senior student-athletes on October 8. Since 2009 Regante has led the non-profit, where she has worked “together with its 110 community partners in supporting strategic initiatives that have a measurable and lasting impact in improving education, income stability, and health throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties.”

“We are grateful that someone of Ms. Regante’s stature has agreed to speak with our student-athletes,” Hill said of Regante’s visit to campus. “We’re excited for her to share her knowledge and experience with our seniors in hopes that they realize they can achieve great things on and off the playing field.”

Additionally, Hill believes that not only is it a positive experience for the student-athletes to receive high-level businesspeople on campus, but it is also a great opportunity for prominent figures to meet with St. Joseph’s students to realize their potential.

The second Golden Eagles Life Skills Program event will take place on November 16, with further details of the event forthcoming. Additional dates will be scheduled for the spring semester.
