Nine-Run Sixth Inning Leads Baseball to 11-8 Win Over Lehman

Written by Joshua Soto (SJC-LI Sports Information)

Patchogue, NY| Behind a three-hit day from right fielder Anthony Bonilla, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team surged past Lehman College 11-8 in a non-conference tilt at Gregg Alfano Field on Friday afternoon.

Bonilla went 3-for-4 in the contest, including two doubles, and drove in a run and scored one. Lou Doria went a perfect 2-for-2 and drove a ball over the right field fence to score two runs.

The Golden Eagles (18-9) and Lehman (7-22) were held scoreless in the game's first two innings before the Lightning got on the board after a bases-loaded walk gave the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

SJC answered back in the bottom of the fourth after a Paul Britt walk brought Doria into the batter's box and took a middle-in fastball over the fence to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Lehman tied up the game in the top of the fifth after a double down the line saw the Lightning's second run crossing the plate.

The Golden Eagles' bats exploded in the bottom of the six, driving in nine runs on five hits and sending 14 batters to the plate. The scoring started with a Louis Fontinha bunt back to the pitcher who overthrew it to the backstop, which scored the inning's first two runs. After three consecutive singles by McAllister, Anthony Raucci, and Bonilla the Golden Eagles saw their lead increase to five (7-2). Another error through the five-hole of the Lehman's shortstop plated two additional runs, an RBI single by Gehring Montoro, and a Tyler Sanderson sac fly rounded out the scoring for the Golden Eagles for the 11-2 lead.

The Lightning started to inch back into the game scoring a run in the seventh inning, before scoring three times in the eighth to close the gap to five (11-6).

Lehman tallied a run after a bases-loaded walk in the ninth, before SJC conceded another run to get the second out of the inning. Up by three (11-8) with runners in scoring position, Tim Woodford struck out the final batter to seal the 11-8 win.

Tom Ekbom received his second career win tossing two innings and allowing two hits.

The Golden Eagles are back on the field tomorrow, April 22 to take on SUNY Old Westbury in a crucial Skyline Conference matchup at 11 AM. Live stats will be available here.
