Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College baseball team is set to start the 2019 season a year after a 2018 campaign that saw the Golden Eagles finish at 27-18 with a 13-5 record in conference play en route to capturing the Skyline Conference Championship title.
SJC entered the Skyline Championship tournament as the No. 2 seed making its way to the finals unscathed before No. 4 seeded USMMA pulled out a 5-4 win pushing the tournament to a winner take all game where the Golden Eagles were battled for 11 innings and came out with a 6-5 win to earn the title and a trip to the NCAA Division III New York Regional.
Returners: In his sixth season leading the Golden Eagles, Coach Rick Garrett returns 26 Golden Eagles to a squad that graduated eight in 2018. Seven of Garrett's eight starting position players come back with 13 returning to the pitching staff.
Junior Tyler Sanderson is back for his third season and will headline the Golden Eagle offense. In a stellar 2018 campaign, Sanderson posted a .353 batting average and a .414 on-base percentage. The Skyline All-Conference First-Team selection knocked in 19 runs on 49 hits, seven doubles, and three triples while scoring 29 runs.
Senior Anthony Raucci earned a Skyline All-Conference Second-Team nod after recording a .345 batting average and an on-base percentage of .447. The shortstop came in second on the team in hits (50), runs scored (31), RBIs (30), doubles (8), and triples (5).
Senior Daniel Campanelli reprises his role behind the dish with senior Tyler Crafa returning at second base and senior Michael Ferrufino at first.
Patrolling the outfield in their final seasons will be seniors Tyler Costa and Gehrig Montoro.
On the mound, seniors Anthony Papa and Anthony Caminiti look to guide a pitching staff back into the postseason. Papa was 5-2 last season with a 2.33 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 54 innings on the bump, while Caminiti finished 5-1 with 19 K's and a 3.04 ERA.
Newcomers: Fourteen new Golden Eagles join Coach Garrett's squad and will look to make an immediate impact.
Nick Vicino and Angelo Montalbano will work to earn innings in the SJC infield while John Graziano, Kevin Shine, and Justin Stromski compete for spots in the outfield.
Mike Badala, Nicholas DiGirolamo, and Anthony Pidokas will seek time behind the plate while seven newcomers will round out the pitching staff.
When they begin: St. Joseph's starts its 2019 campaign on Tuesday, March 12 with a non-conference matchup vs. non-conference opponent Lehman College. First pitch is slated for 4:30 pm.
SJC then heads south to Fort Meyers, FL for a 12-game stretch before opening Skyline Conference play with a pair of doubleheaders at the College of Mt. St. Vincent and USMMA on March 23 and 24, respectively.
The results of the Skyline Conference Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll, released on February 15, saw the Golden Eagles finishing on top of the standings with Farmingdale State and USMMA completing the top three.
