St. Joseph's University (L.I.) Director of Athletics Melody Cope announced on June 29, 2022 the appointment of Tom Caputo as head coach of the institution's baseball team.

Caputo replaces Richard Garrett, who announced his retirement after nine years at the helm of SJLI's program. Caputo worked under Garrett as an assistant coach since 2019 and helped lead the team to its fifth Skyline Conference Championship in 2022.

"We are excited to announce that Tom will be taking the helm of our baseball program," said Cope. "In addition to his vast knowledge and coaching experience, Tom has a great passion for the game and is an ideal mentor for our student-athletes both on and off the baseball field."

"I could not be happier about the opportunity to remain a part of the St. Joseph's family and its baseball program," said Caputo. "I'm eager to continue working with the coaching staff and our current student-athletes. I'm looking forward to building upon the tradition of success, on and off the field, that has already been established here at the University. "

Since Caputo joined Garrett's staff in 2019, SJLI has compiled a 60-42 overall record and a 37-19 mark in Skyline Conference play. Caputo helped produce 10 All-Region selections and 13 Skyline All-Conference team honorees.

Prior to St. Joseph's, Caputo spent five seasons (2012-2016) as head coach of the Dowling College baseball team, registering an overall record of 144-99-1.

Under his guidance, the Golden Lions claimed two East Coast Conference Tournament titles in four appearances with three trips to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. Caputo, a two-time ECC Coach of the Year, landed 19 Golden Lions on ECC All-Conference teams--including the ECC Pitcher of the Year in the 2013 and 2014 seasons--with six All-Region selections and an All-American.

Caputo began his college coaching career as an assistant coach at Farmingdale State College in 2017. During his three-year stint, the Rams won three conference titles and made an appearance in the Division III College World Series. He left Farmingdale in 2010 to join the Dowling coaching staff, initially as an assistant.

Caputo earned his Bachelor's Degree from Hofstra where he played Division I baseball. He served as captain of the Flying Dutchmen and earned All-Conference Honors for his performances. After college, Caputo played three seasons with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball from 2001 to 2003.

The Valley Stream, NY native graduated from Valley Stream Central High School in 1994, where he played both football and baseball, earning All-County recognition in both sports.
