O’Halloran’s Buzzer Beater Sees Men’s Basketball Past SJC-Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY| Senior Kevin O'Halloran scored with .2 seconds left in regulation to lift the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team to a 71-70 Skyline Conference victory over St. Joseph's College (Brkln) at the Hill Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles' sixth-straight win sees them improve to 12-7 overall on the year and 8-4 in Skyline play. As of Saturday afternoon, they occupied the third and final playoff spot in the South Division.

The Bears drop to 2-10 overall and 3-17 in conference action this season.

Sophomore Spencer Malloy scored 17 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field and was one of four Golden Eagles to score in double-digits. The center also collected a team-high nine rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Alec Tabada and sophomore Ryan McNeely went for 13 points apiece. O'Halloran shot 4-for-6 from the field and tallied 11 points in eight minutes of action.

SJC led by as many as 15 points in the first half and carried a five-point advantage (36-31) into the break.

Brooklyn went ahead 41-40 3:49 into the second frame and looked poised to win the contest when Richie Simon finished off a layup that extended the hosts' lead to six points with 51 seconds left in regulation.

O'Halloran cut the lead in half with a three-pointer 26 seconds later (69-66), but Brooklyn brought one point back (70-66) with a converted free throw with 24 seconds remaining. 

A McNeely three-pointer nine seconds after brought the guests to within one point (70-69), setting up O'Halloran to win the game with a made layup with .2 seconds on the game clock.

St. Joseph's outshot the Bears 47.6% to 43.8% from the field but were outrebounded, 42-35. SJC held advantages in bench points (32-21), points in the paint (42-34), and points off turnovers (19-9).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, February 9, when they host Farmingdale State for a Skyline Conference contest inside the Danzi Center at 7:00 pm.
