Men’s Soccer Topples Yeshiva for 1st Win of the Season

Patchogue, NY| Junior Justin Busto scored the game-winner and picked up a helper as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team took a 3-1 decision from Skyline Conference rival Yeshiva University to register the team's first win of the season at home on Tuesday evening.

With the win, head coach Alex Mendolia notches his first-career victory as the Golden Eagles improve to 1-5 (1-1 Skyline) on the year. The Maccabees fall to 1-6-1 (1-4-1 Skyline) with the loss.

SJC opened the scoring in the 12th minute, when Busto, streaking down the right flank, played a cross into the box, which found the head of senior Justin Heredia, who headed the ball home for his second goal of the season and the 15th of his career.

After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, Busto doubled the Golden Eagles' lead in the 59th minute when he beat two defenders on the right and served up a cross into the box, which was deflected into the Yeshiva goal by a defender.

Three minutes later, the Maccabees drew one goal back when Albert Dichy deposited an Aaron Braun cross from the right flank. Despite the momentum shift, SJC found an equalizer three minutes later when sophomore Kyle Conway banged in a rebound in front of goal to reestablish the hosts' two-goal advantage (3-1), which they would carry to the final buzzer.

SJC generated 20 shots to Yeshiva's 14 in the match, but was edged 7-6 in corners. Keeper Avery Gomez was credited with four saves, as was Yeshiva's Maor Feinstein.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, September 24 when they visit SUNY Purchase for a 12:00 PM Skyline Conference showdown. Follow along with live stats here.
