Men’s Soccer Edged by Old Westbury in OT

Old Westbury, NY| Despite leading 2-1 at the half, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 double-overtime defeat on the road vs. SUNY Old Westbury on Wednesday evening.

With the defeat, the Golden Eagles slide to 5-8 (4-3 Skyline) on the year as the Panthers improve to 8-3-4 (5-1-1 Skyline).

Old Westbury would open the scoring seven minutes into the match when Ronald Monge pounced on a loose ball in the box to give the hosts the early 1-0 edge. SJC would knot the score at one in the 16th minute when freshman Rayneri Ruiz converted a penalty, but sophomore Shayne Johnson's first-career goal in the 45th minute ensured the guests took a 2-1 lead into the break.

The Golden Eagles did well to shore up the midfield through the second half's first 25 minutes, but in the 72nd minute OW's Dominick Guidice took a throughball from Chris Agbodoh and beat SJC keeper Avery Gomez 1-v-1 to tie the game at two.

After a scoreless first overtime, Guidice snuck behind the SJC defence midway through the second overtime period and deposited the game winner and his 11th goal of the season.

The Panthers generated 22 shots to the Golden Eagles' 11 and forced Gomez into making six saves. SJC held the edge in corners (11-6).

Strong games were had by right back Eddie Whalen, who made a couple last-ditch tackles in the second half, and forward Chance Casey.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday, October 15 when they host Sarah Lawrence College for Senior Day. The match will begin at 12:00 PM with the Senior Ceremony beginning 20 minutes prior to kickoff. Live stats will be available here.
