Men’s Volleyball Drops Two at New Paltz on Sunday Afternoon

New Paltz, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team was handed a pair of losses on Sunday by non-conference opponents Alderson Broaddus (3-0) and No. 2 New Paltz St. (3-1).

With the defeats, the Golden Eagles slip to 3-2 on the year as the Battlers improves to 1-9 and New Paltz to 11-2.

After consecutive 25-15, 25-21 losses in the first and second sets, respectively, the Golden Eagles trailed by only three in the third (11-8). Later, down 18-10, SJC sparked a 6-1 run to cut its deficit to three once again (19-16) but the Battlers held off the Golden Eagles to complete the three-set sweep.

Leading the SJC attack was Paul Curaro, who collected nine kills in the match and also led the team with seven digs. Matthew Amberge recorded six kills and Kyle Biggers went for five.

Tyler Jones dished out a team-best 22 assists and was credited with seven digs.

New Paltz 3, SJC 1

After dropping the first set 25-18, SJC came from behind to win the second the set 25-16. The Golden Eagles took a loss in the third set (25-10) before passing up the chance to tie the match up in the fourth set, as the defending national champions got the better of the Golden Eagles and pulled away with the 25-15 win.

Amberge and Curaro led and SJC attack that generated 27 kills, but both were out-hit by New Paltz's Ryan Cole and Anthony Bonilla, who recorded 12 kills each.

Jones was credited with 25 assists and collected a game-best eight digs.
