Men’s Volleyball Opens Season with Pair of Victories

Dallas, PA| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team opened its 2020 season with a pair of non-conference victories over Misericordia (3-1) and Lasell (3-0) in Dallas, PA on Friday afternoon.

SJC 3, Misericordia 1

The Golden Eagles squandered an 8-5 lead in the first set and dropped the first frame by a score of 25-23 but recovered well, securing a 25-18 win in set two that launched a convincing 3-1 match victory. 

Senior Paul Curaro put down a game-best 15 kills and junior Jack Solen hit .393 and recorded 13 kills. Seniors Kyle Biggers and David Slager contributed nine and eight kills, respectively. 

Senior Will Flohr was credited with a game-best 17 digs, and junior Jason Siriban led all players with 44 assists. 

SJC hit .262 in the contest and limited Misericordia to a .132 hitting efficiency. 

SJC 3, Lasell 0

The Golden Eagles went the distance twice with Lasell, in the first and third sets, both of which were won by St. Joseph's by scores of 26-24. In the second set, SJC secured a 25-20 win, setting up the possibility for a sweep in the third.

Curaro again led all participants in kills, this time with 11. The outside hitter was also credited with seven digs in the contest.

Biggers hit .375 and put down eight kills, and Slager went for six kills and six digs.

Flohr shared a match-best with 10 digs and Siriban dished out a game-high 32 assists, scooped up five digs and served up a pair of aces.

Senior Matt Cole hit .300, put down five kills and had a hand in three blocks. Solen went for four kills and eight digs.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 18 when they continue play at Misericordia with non-conference matches vs. Sage (11:00 am) and Randolph-Macon (1:00 pm).
