Softball Splits on Second Day of The Spring Games

Kissimmee, FL| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team split for the second-straight day at The Spring Games in Kissimmee on Saturday. Following a 5-4 defeat at the hands of Montclair State, the Golden Eagles, now 2-2 on the year, edged Rutgers-Newark for a 6-3 victory.

Montclair 5, SJC 4

Senior Lyndsay Smocer (2-for-3) opened the scoring in the first inning when she scored Franzelyn Russo (1-for-4) with an RBI single to center, and after Montclair tied the score up at one in the bottom half of the inning, the Golden Eagles took back the lead in the fourth when the Montclair pitcher hit Smocer and forced junior Elise Grau (1-for-2) home (2-1).

Montclair went on to score three runs in the bottom of the fourth and, despite a two-run seventh inning, SJC could not erase the deficit, eventually falling 5-4.

Alyssa Rivera tossed three innings and took the loss for the Golden Eagles. Patricia McGloin also pitched three innings and allowed one hit.

SJC 6, Rutgers-Newark 3

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third, sophomore Aryana Caputo drove in a run to cut the deficit to one run (2-1) and set up Smocer to tie the game shortly after with another RBI single.

Later in the third, freshman Lindsay Ness put the Golden Eagles up 4-2 with a two-RBI double that scored Smocer and Caputo.

Rutgers got one back in the fifth but Ashley Accardi extended SJC's lead to three runs in the bottom of the sixth when she scored sophomore Zoe Kelly and Grau with a two-RBI double.

Catherine Zucker (1-1) struckout four batters and allowed two earned runs in a complete-game effort.

The Golden Eagles return to action at The Spring Games on Sunday with a pair of contest vs. St.  Nortbert (9:45 am) and Grinnell (6:00 pm).
