Softball Blanks Old Westbury in Skyline Opener

Old Westbury, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team opened its 2019 Skyline Conference campaign with a pair of 4-0 road victories over SUNY Old Westbury on Sunday afternoon.

The wins see the Golden Eagles move to 6-6 overall on the year and 2-0 in conference play as the Panthers slip to 5-4 (0-2 Skyline).

Game 1: SJC 4, Old Westbury 0

SJC broke the scoring deadlock in the top of the fourth, when sophomore Zoe Kelly (2-for-4) scored senior Jillian McFadzen (0-for-3) with an RBI single to left center. Junior Franzelyn Russo (1-for-3), the next batter, doubled the guests' advantage with an RBI triple to left center (2-0).

Junior Meagan McClinchey (2-for-4) expanded the Golden Eagles' lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI single (3-0) and freshman Jenna DeFina (1-for-4) capped off the game's scoring with an RBI single of her own (4-0) in the top of the sixth.

Freshman Catherine Zucker (2-2) struck out eight and allowed just one hit in a complete-game outing.

Game 2: SJC 4, Old Westbury 0

Similar to game one, the teams played scoreless softball until late, this time the fifth inning when sophomore Kassandra Tibbetts (2-for-2) scored freshman Jenna Kreiling (0-for-0) with an RBI single up the middle. Two more runs in the fifth off the bats of Russo (0-for-4) and DeFina (2-for-4) enabled the Golden Eagles to take a 3-0 lead.

Tibbetts wrapped the afternoon's scoring in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to right center that scored junior Alyssa Rivera (0-for-1) from third.

Rivera (3-1) struck out five and allowed two hits in seven innings of action in the pitcher's circle.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, March 28 when they visit William Paterson University for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 pm.
