Women's Basketball Defeated by Centenary College, 73-57

New York, NY|  The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team dropped its match, 73-57, against Centenary (N.J.) in the final round of the Hunter College Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.  The Golden Eagles are now 1-3 as Centenary College improves to 2-2 on the season.

Michelle Lupoli was effective on the court shooting 66% from the field and leading the Golden Eagles with 19 points.  Andrea Iavarone added with 16 points of her own,  as she went 8-for-11 from the charity stripe.

The two teams entered the game in a tightly contested battle as neither team had more than a two possession lead in the first quarter. SJC trailed by as much as five with two minutes left, but came within two with the help of an Iavarone free throw and a Jacqueline Zizzo jumper. At the end of the first quarter the Golden Eagles trailed the Cyclones 14-10.

The Cyclones had the hot hand, starting off the quarter with an 8-2 run. Iavarone spearheaded a 9-0 run, as the Golden Eagles trailed 26-19 with less than three minutes to play in the half.  The two sides exchanged baskets as Centenary still had the 32-20 led heading into the half.

The third quarter featured a shoot as both team continued to trade baskets. Iavarone led the quarter with 12 points and converted six free throws.  At the end of the quarter, they Cyclones still held the 57-44 lead.

The Golden Eagles pulled within ten points of the Cyclones with seventh minutes to play in the fourth quarter.  The Cyclones then ran away with the lead as they sparked a 9-3 run to earn the 73-57 victory.

Iavarone was named to the All-Tounrament team along with Mello Mallory George from Centenary College. 

SJC will have its home-opener on Monday, November 30 as it takes on Rutgers- Camden at the Danzi Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
