Women's Basketball Bested by Mount St. Mary, 66-40

Newburgh, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team suffered a 66-40 loss to Skyline foe Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday evening inside the Kaplan Center. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 5-11 (2-5 Skyline) on the year, while the Knights improve their record to 6-9 (4-4 Skyline).

The game got of to a slow start as the two sides found themselves tied at four with six minutes left to play in the first. The Knights were able to distance themselves by six points (10-4), before Caroline Gehring's 3-pointer brought the game back to a one possession deficit (7-10) with 2:45 left in the first frame. However, Mount Saint Mary closed out the quarter with momentum on its side, scoring four unanswered points, holding a 14-7 lead.

Claire Brady opened the second quarter with a jumper, which was followed by a three-pointer by Jackie Zizzo to pull the Golden Eagles to within two (12-14) at the 9:24 mark. The Knights started to pull away with an 11 point-lead (25-14) after they sparked an 11-0 run into the fourth minute of the second quarter. Mount Saint Mary continued to attack the rim, and found itself leading the Golden Eagles 31-18 after the first two quarters.

Despite shooting 46.7% from the field, St. Joseph's continued to trail the Knights 50-32 at the end of the third quarter. Sophomore Andrea Iavarone led the charge for the blue and gold, after being held scoreless in the first half, scoring 10 out of SJC's 14 points. Teammates Danielle Gehring and Asia Rountree both chipped in two points apiece.

The Knights continued to knock down shots, as they opened up the final quarter with a 13-3 run extending the lead to 63-35 with 3:12 left in the game. Down 66-40 in the final two minutes of action, Gehring knocked down SJC's final three points of the game, but the Golden Eagles eventually suffered the 60-44 defeat.

Iavarone was the Golden Eagles leading scoring with 13 points. The sophomore also assisted on three baskets and pulled down four rebounds. Caroline Gehring contributed eight points, three assists and three rebounds.
