Patchogue, NY| Junior Jennifer Gubell scored a career-best 24 points as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team defeated the Purchase College Panthers, 71-65, in a Skyline Conference matchup on Thursday night.

With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 6-14 (5-8 Skyline) on the year as the Panthers fall to 2-16 (1-12 Skyline).

In a game that would see zero lead changes, SJC would get on the board first courtesy of a Jakie Zizzo three-pointer just 15 seconds into the game, and jumped to a 8-2 lead at the 7:46 mark. Up 11-7, the Golden Eagles sparked a 14-0 run into the 1:21 mark before exiting the first with a 25-9 lead.

Another made three-pointer by Zizzo gave St. Joseph's a 19-point lead (28-9), the Panthers were able to close the deficit 14 but the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 24 for the 40-16 advantage at the break.

Frances Minaya started the third with a made three-pointer, but Gubell answered back with a made three-pointer of her own to keep the host's lead to 24 (43-19). The Panthers then exploded with a 16-2 run until the 2:20 mark to close their deficit to just eight-points. The Golden Eagles regained their double-digit lead after Alicia Indence's three in the final minutes of the frame.

The two sides exchanged baskets up to the midway point of the final quarter when Purchase pulled within eight points of the Golden Eagles (57-49) at the 4:21 mark.  The Panthers would come as close to four points of SJC but the Golden Eagles staved off any comeback attempt by Purchase to claim the 71-65 win.

In addition to Gubell's career-best 24 points the Levittown, NY native collected six rebounds and tallied two assists. Zizzo shot 5-7 from behind the arc and finished with 16 points on the contest. Juliana Cintron-Leonardo notched her first career double-double totaling a career-high in both rebounds (23) and points (13). Indence also contributed with 13 points in the game.

The Golden Eagles were outshot by their opponents 29.6%-38.6% from the field, but SJC  held advantages in rebounds 52-50.

The Golden Eagles continue conference play on Saturday, February 7th when they host the Sage Colleges at 1:00pm. Live stats will be available here.
