Women's Basketball Downed by Dolphins in Skyline Conference Tilt

Riverdale, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team was defeated by the College of Mount St. Vincent, 78-59, in a Skyline Conference matchup on Monday night inside the Sharp Center. With the loss, the Golden Eagles slip to 6-16 (5-9 Skyline) while the Dolphins improve to 14-7 (10-4 Skyline).
In a match that saw zero lead changes, Mount St. Vincent would get on the board first courtesy of a Kristen Merrell five seconds into the game. After falling behind 16-6 at 2:59, a layup by Alicia Indence cut the Golden Eagles' deficit to 10 points in the first, but a 9-4 run by the Dolphins reestablished Mount St. Vincent's commanding lead.
The Dolphins maintained a double-digit lead (31-15) well into the second quarter, before exploding with a 9-0 run to put the hosts ahead 40-17 at the 2:22 mark. The two sides exchanged baskets before Mount St. Vincent headed into break with a 26-point lead.
The Dolphins started the third quarter with a 16-5 run to increase the visitors deficit to 37 (61-24) at 6:15. Despite a made three-pointer by Jackie Zizzo, CMSV exited the third frame with a 69-37 lead.
Jennifer Gubell scored the first basket in the final quarter with a made three-pointer before Shania Lewis answered back with a made free throw. The two teams traded baskets until the final minutes as the Dolphins sailed to a 78-59 victory.
Zizzo led the game in scoring with 24 points in addition to adding six assists. Gubell dropped 14 points and grabbed two boards.
The Golden Eagles shot 37.5% from the field compared to the Dolphins' 50.8%. The Dolphins also held advantages in rebounds (44-28) and assists (25-12).
The Golden Eagles return action on Thursday, February 9 when they travel to Brooklyn to take on sister school St. Joseph's College (Brklyn). Live stats will be available here.
