Women's Basketball Edged Out By Bears in a Skyline Conference Showdown on Thursday Night

Brooklyn, NY | The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team was defeated by sister-school St. Joseph's College (Brklyn), 87-76, in a Skyline Conference matchup on Friday night in the Hill Center.

With the loss, the Golden Eagles slip to 6-18 (5-12 Skyline) and are eliminated from playoff contention, while the Bears improve to 9-15 (7-10 Skyline).

SJC-Brklyn would get on the board first courtesy of a Lauren Quesada layup a nearly two minutes into the game. Tied 8-8 after a Michelle Lupoli jumper at 5:32, the Bears sparked an 8-2 run before the Golden Eagles pulled within one of the hosts to exit the quarter trailing 18-17.

SJC-Brklyn started the second frame with an 8-0 run to take a nine-point lead over the visitors' (26-17). In a series of back-and-forth baskets between the two teams, the Bears continued to have control of the game with 37-29 over the Golden Eagles at the break.

Back-to-back threes by Jackie Zizzo and Alicia Indence helped spark a 9-0 run to cut SJC-LI's deficit to one (39-38) at 6:49, however, the Bears answered back with a 14-1 run to take their first double-digit lead of the contest (53-40). The two sides exchanged baskets once more but the Bears sill held a 15-point lead (62-47) heading into the final quarter.

In another exchange of baskets to start the fourth quarter the Bears stifled any comeback attempt by the Golden Eagles and with 4:25 remaining in the match, SJC-Brklyn would hold its largest lead (79-57) before earning the 87-76 win.

Zizzo led the team in scoring with 24 points and went 6-10 from the behind the arc. The senior guard added with two assists and three rebounds on the night. Juliana Mellor contributed with 11 points and five rebounds.

The Golden Eagles outshot the Bears 44.6%-43.7%, while the Bears had the upper hand in rebounds 42-31.

The Golden Eagles will conclude their 2016-17 season on the road when the team travels to Kings Point, NY to take on conference foe USMMA on Saturday, February 18 at 1:00 PM. Live stats and video will be available here.
