Women’s Soccer and Purchase Play to 1-1 Draw

Written by Joshua Soto (SJC-LI Sports Information)

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team and their Purchase College's counterpart played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon at Danzi Stadium in Patchogue, NY. With the draw, the Golden Eagles sit at 3-6-1 (3-1-1 Skyline) and the Panthers at 3-6-1 (3-1-1 Skyline).

The Panthers jumped to a quick lead at the second minute when Rebecca Rojas took the early corner into the box for Nina Brennan, whose header gave the Purchase a 1-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles generated six shots before slotting home the equalizer in the 33rd minute. Christina Gagliardi came barreling down the left wing and fired a shot into the upper-90. The rest of the half would see just one shot from Gagliardi in the 40th minute to conclude the frame.

The Golden Eagles outshot the visitors in the second half, 5-3, and continued to push players up, breaking from their own end on several occasions before being called back for offsides.

After regulation failed to yield a winner, the two sides entered overtime in search for a valuable conference victory, but it wasn't in the cards. St. Joseph's had two corner kicks in the first overtime period but could not convert, ensuring a 0-0 draw.

The Golden Eagles edged the Panthers in shots (16-6) and keeper Samantha Wedderburn was forced into making just three saves.

Katie Condron had a strong showing at the three slot creating opportunities to scores and did well to control the pace of the game. Central defenders Samantha Caruso and Katelyn Jones did well to shore up the backline and stifle the Purchase attackers.

St. Joseph's is back in action on Tuesday, October 4 when they welcome Western Conn St. to Danzi Stadium for a non-conference showdown. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM. Live stats will be available here.
