Danbury, CT| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Western Connecticut St. in a season-opening match played on the road on Friday afternoon. The contest kicked off the Colonial Invitational, which runs through Saturday afternoon.

After jumping out to an 8-6 lead in the first set, the Golden Eagles fell behind 14-10 when the Colonials rallied for eight of 10 points. After a Western service error, senior Courtney Wickline registered a kill to draw the set back to within two points (14-12), but an 11-5 run by the hosts clinched the 25-17 set victory.

Western carried its momentum into the second set, pulling out to a 12-5 lead early on. The Golden Eagles would come as close as three points (12-8), but the Colonials kept their distance and cruised to a 25-17 win.

A much tighter third set saw the score tied eight times, including at 17 before SJC took an 18-17 lead following a Western attacking error. Another attacking error on the Colonials would later tie the game at 20, but it was Western that grabbed five of the final seven points to earn the 25-22 set win and 3-0 match victory.

Wickline (12 assists) and fellow senior Courtney Bocchieri (6 kills) led an SJC attack that produced 24 totals kills. Junior Morgan Tiska registered five kills in her Golden Eagle debut, while sophomore Danielle Senecal was credited with a team-best nine digs.

Western's Smith collected a game-high 11 kills, and Danielle Kaminsky dished out a game-best 24 assists.

The Golden Eagles return to action on day two of the Colonial Invitational on Saturday and will face Simmons at 12:00 PM and Colby-Sawyer at 2:00 PM. Live stats and video available here.
