Baseball Picks Up Skyline Sweep Over USMMA

Kings Point, NY| The St. Joseph's College baseball team picked up a pair of Skyline Conference wins over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles improve to 5-5 on the season with a 4-4 conference mark. The Mariners suffered their first losses of the season and now sit at 7-2 overall, 6-2 Skyline.

Game One: SJCLI 4, USMMA 0

Freshman Paul Gugliuzzo  (2-for-4, R) set the table for the Golden Eagles' first run of the day leading off with a bunt single and a stolen base. Sophomore Phil Krapata (2-for-4, 2R) singled up the middle putting runners on the corners with no outs. A ground ball to the left side followed allowing Gugliuzzo to score and give SJC a 1-0 lead.

An unearned run in the third extended the advantage to 2-0 before an RBI single in the top of the sixth from freshman Joe Sanguedolce (2-for-3, RBI) scored Ryan Decoursey who tripled to start the inning.

The Golden Eagles tacked on another insurance run in the top of the seventh courtesy of an RBI single up the middle from Charles Rainone (1-for-4, RBI) moving the game to its final 4-0.

Junior Kevin Czeczotka (1-0) earned his first win of the season limiting the Mariners to just three hits while striking out three in a complete-game effort.

USMMA's Joe Raab took the loss allowing four runs on 13 hits with six strikeouts.

Game Two: SJCLI 7, USMMA 3

SJC sent seven Golden Eagles to plate in the top of the first stringing four hits for four runs.

The Mariners cut their deficit in half with a run in each the bottom of the first and the second.

Back-to-back doubles started the top of the third for the Golden Eagles and an RBI single from Nick Vicino (1-for-4, RBI) widened the gap back to four, 6-2.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth, Anthony Raucci (3-for-4, 2R) tripled to center and came into score on a sacrifice fly. USMMA managed to push a run across in the bottom of the seventh but ultimately fell short, 7-3.

SJC's Daniel Deckert picked up the win allowing just three runs on nine hits with four K's. Anthony Cinquemani earned the save after tossing two flawless innings out of the pen.

The Golden Eagles return to Gregg Alfano Field and wrap up the series when they host USMMA on Monday, April 12 at 3:00 pm.
