Men’s Basketball Suffers Skyline Defeat to Mt. St. Mary

Newburgh, NY| Shooting troubles plagued the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team as it suffered a 77-59 defeat to Skyline Conference rival Mount Saint Mary College inside the Kaplan Center on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 5-10 (4-6) on the season while the Knights improve to 6-9 (4-7).

A Dominique Spann jump shot and a Fernando Vazquez layup put St. Joseph's up 4-0 a minute and a half into the game, but the Knights responded with eight of the next 12 points to knot the game up at eight at 15:51. The Golden Eagles would pace the next five minutes to take an 18-11 lead with 10:45 to play in the first frame, and later a CJ Capilets three-ball extended the guests' advantage (25-17) at 7:49.

After falling behind eight points, the Knights used a 19-6 run over the final 7:30 of the first quarter to pull ahead 36-31 at the break.

Mount Saint Mary continued its torrid pace early in the second half, recording the frame's first nine points to extend its lead to 14 points (45-31) at 16:39. A 9-0 run, capped by a Vazquez three-pointer, brought the Golden Eagles back to within one (45-40) with 14:20 to play, but it would be the closest SJC would come to catching the Knights. After trading points for nearly eight minutes, Mount Saint Mary pulled away and cruised to a 19-point (77-59) victory.

Junior Andy Laurent shot 7-16 from the field and led all scorers with 19 points. The guard fell just one rebound short of a double-double, and also contributed four assists and two steals. Spann went for 16 points and five rebounds, and Vazquez posted 10 points.

Overall, the Knights outshot the Golden Eagles from the field (48.3%-37.7%) and from beyond the arc (29.4%-27.6%). Mount Saint Mary also outrebounded SJC (43-32) and scored more points in the paint (32-24).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Monday, January 18, when they travel to Bronxville, NY to face Sarah Lawrence College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM. Live stats will be available here.
