Men’s Basketball Edges Baruch on Thursday

New York, NY| Freshman Alec Tabada's game-high 19 points powered the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team to a 66-63 non-conference victory in Manhattan on Thursday afternoon.

The win sees the Golden Eagles move to 5-5 overall on the year as the Bearcats drop to 7-4.

Tabada shot 5-for-7 from the field and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe for his highest point total of the season. The forward also contributed a game-high 11 rebounds and four steals.

Sophomore Spencer Malloy shot 7-for-14 for 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Senior Matt Hirdt had 12 points and five rebounds.

Baruch was paced by Liam Sanborn, who scored 17 points on 6-for-16 shooting.

SJC took a 36-28 lead into the break and led by as many as 17 points (2nd - 16:50), but a late-game push by the hosts brought the contest to within one point (64-63). 

Tabada and Gordon Shouler sank free throws inside the final 30 seconds to secure a three-point win for the guests.

SJC shot 38.3% from the field and 36.8% from three while limiting Baruch to a 33.9% shooting percentage. St. Joseph's also held edges in rebounds (43-38), points off turnovers (22-15), and second-chance points (11-10).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Monday, January 3, when they host Centenary for a non-conference contest inside the Danzi Center at 7:00 pm.
