Men's Basketball Suffers Loss to Manhattanville, 61-52

Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's basketball team fell to Manhattanville College, 61-52, in a conference match-up at the Danzi Center on Wednesday evening.

Top performers:
  • Junior Spencer Malloy went 7-for-12 from the field and scored a game-high 16 points with seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks to lead the Golden Eagles

  • Junior Xavier Allen added 15 points and collected nine boards

  • Junior Ryan McNeely scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench

  • The Valiants were led by Tommy Lotito, who scored 14 points with six rebounds and six assists

  • Ryan Giordano contributed 10 points and seven rebounds for Manhattanville

How it happened:
  • Manhattanville jumped out in front and scored 10 of the first 14 points of the game to take a 10-4 lead at the 16:58 mark

  • Malloy scored eight of the Golden Eagles' first 12 points, with his final basket of that run bringing the hosts within two (14-12) with 12:44 on the clock

  • St. Joseph's took their first lead of the game on a jump shot for Malloy at the 6:06 mark that put the hosts ahead 20-19

  • The Valiants responded with a 10-0 run to take a 29-20 lead, then went into the half up 29-22

  • The visitors scored the first four points of the second half on a pair of baskets for Giordano, then the Golden Eagles scored the next four points before graduate Matthew Hirdt's three-pointer at the 16:32 mark cut the deficit to six (35-29)

  • The Valiants responded with a three of their own, then a three-point play for Malloy brought the hosts within six again (38-32) with 14:21 on the clock

  • Manhattanville proceeded to go on an 8-2 run that extended their lead to 49-37 with 8:17 remaining

  • The Valiants took a 14-point lead (55-41) for their largest lead of the game on Andrew Saint-Louis' layup at the 3:39 mark

  • Malloy's three-point play with 49 seconds remaining trimmed the deficit to nine (59-50), then Allen's layup at the 38-second mark brought them within eight, but time ran out and the Golden Eagles were dealt their third straight loss

Notes:
  • St. Joseph's shot 36.1% from the field and 16.7% from three-point territory

  • The Valiants posted a 37.5% shooting percentage overall and 35% from three-point range

  • The Golden Eagles held the advantage in points in the paint (30-22) and rebounds (43-39)

  • Manhattanville scored 18 points off the bench against SJLI's nine
