The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's basketball team opened their regular season with a 90-71 victory over York College on Wednesday night.

  • Junior Alec Tabada led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 17 rebounds and four steals, a team-high 26 points, to go along with two assists and two blocks

  • Senior Terrin Roy and junior Xavier Allen each scored 16 points

  • Sophomore Justin Turner secured the double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, with three steals and two assists

  • Senior Spencer Malloy finished with 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists, one steal and two blocks

  • Olawale Kila led the Cardinals with 27 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals 

  • Rohan Singh added 12 points for York

How it happened
  • The game started with both teams trading baskets as Allen would hit a three-point basket to pull SJLI ahead by five points, just over five minutes into the first half

  • A Tabada three-pointer would tie the game at 32 and would spark a 15-4 Golden Eagles run to close out the first half with an 11-point lead

  • St. Joseph's started the second half on a 13-0 run that was capped off by an Allen jump shot to pull ahead 60-36 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game

  • The Cardinals cut the lead down to just 13 with just four minutes to play on a Kila three 

  • A block on behalf of York College allowed a dunk by Kila, followed by an SJLI turnover that led to a Malaki Clark three to bring the score 80-69 with two minutes to play

  • The Golden Eagles would finish the game off on a 10-0 scoring run that saw Tabada score the final eight points of the game while collecting a block and a steal to secure the 90-71 victory

  • SJLI shot 44.3% from the field and 45.0% from beyond the arc, while York was 38.2% from the field and a modest 45.5% from three-point range

  • The Golden Eagles held a 19 rebounding advantage, 47-28

  • St. Joseph's was 27-33 from the free throw line, shooting 81.8% 

  • The Golden Eagles finished with 32 points in the paint and 19 second-chance points
