Men's Basketball Falls to Stevens on Wednesday

Results:

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to Stevens on Wednesday evening.

Top performers:

• Senior Spencer Malloy led the Golden Eagles, scoring 13 points, adding five rebounds, and one assist 

• Junior Xavier Allen finished with 12 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block

• Junior Alec Tabada posted seven points, five rebounds, and a team-high four assists 

• Stephen Braunstein led the Ducks with a game-high 29, shooting 10-14 from the field and 9-12 from three-point range 

• Steven's Jack Spellman secured a triple-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocks

• Xander Sing provided 12 points for the Ducks, shooting 100% from the field 

How it happened:

• With just over five minutes of action into the first half, the game was tied at 11 until a Ryan McNeely free throw pulled SJLI ahead by one, and just minutes later, a Tabada steal and score brought the lead to three

• Braunstein found space from beyond the arc to sink a three to pull SIT ahead by one, but Terrin Roy would respond with a three of his own to give St. Joseph's the lead again by two with just over nine minutes remaining in the half

• The Ducks would go on a 17-4 run over the next five minutes of play that was capped off by a three from Kyle Madison

• A Kenny Rodriguez jumper would pull the Golden Eagles to within six with just three minutes to play, but again, Steven's responded with a 10-2 run to end the half, taking a 48-34 lead

• As the Golden Eagles looked to cut the lead, McNeely came off the bench early in the second half, providing five quick points on a layup and a three-pointer

• A steal from Thomas Bell led to a quick outlet pass to Allen, who drove it to the basket for the tough finish at the rim

• Stevens again responded with a run-scoring 19 points to SJLI's six in an eight-minute span to take control of a 29-point lead

• The Ducks would hold off the Golden Eagles in the end, securing a 90-64 victory

Notes:

• St. Joseph's shot 25-66 from the field (37.9%) and 3-9 from the three-point range (33.3%)

• Stevens finished shooting 46.4% from the field while shooting 38.5% from three-point range

• The Ducks held a rebounding advantage, 48-31

• Both teams scored 32 points in the paint

• The game finished with 16 lead changes

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, December 6, when they host Farmingdale St. for a Skyline Conference matchup at 7:00 pm.
