SJC Mourns Passing of Former Golf Coach George Cangero

Patchogue, NY| St. Joseph's College (L.I.) is saddened to hear of the passing of former men's golf coach George Cangero.

Cangero was SJC's first-ever men's golf coach and founded the program in 2001. In his 15 years at the helm, he led the team to three Skyline Conference championships, two NCAA tournament appearances, and produce three Skyline individual champions.

A total of 32 student-athletes garnered Skyline All-Conference honors under Cangero, who was named conference Coach of the Year in 2014. That same season, Christian Bleck finished first at the conference championships and was named Individual Champion.

In 2015, Cangero guided SJC to its third title and placed four student-athletes on All-Conference teams including Bleck, who finished second and was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.

The Golden Eagles went on to participate at the 2016 NCAA Division III Championship in Rochester, NY, and placed 29th in a field of 41 competing teams.

Cangero left St. Joseph's in 2016 for Farmingdale State, where he won five Skyline titles in six years.
