Men’s Lacrosse Surges to 19-4 Win in Season-Opener

Riverdale, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team tallied a 19-4 season-opening victory at the College of Mount St. Vincent on Saturday afternoon.

After the cancelation of the remainder of the 2020 season, the Golden Eagles start the 2021 season with a 1-0 record for the first time since 2019. The Dolphins sit at 0-1 with the loss.

SJC was powered by sophomore Jack Gilbride, who scored an incredible seven goals on 10 shots. The attack also pitched in with an assist and four ground balls. 

Junior attack Tim McCann produced three goals and one assist, and junior midfielder Brian Hunter scored three times and collected two ground balls. 

Junior goalie Andrew Brust made 13 saves on 17 shots in a 60-minute effort. 

SJC scored the contest's first five goals, three of which came from the stick of Gilbride, who registered a hat trick just 6:38 into the game.

Up 10-3 at the break, Gilbride added two more tallies in the third quarter with the remaining two tallies in the period coming via juniors Matt Trautman and Robert Lopez (14-3).

Hunter, Gilbride, and McCann, along with junior Richie Vetter and senior Jesse McKeever, scored in the fourth quarter before CMSV's Nana-Kofi Agyekum wrapped the scoring (19-4) with 42 seconds remaining. 

SJC held sizable advantages in shots (45-26) and ground balls (53-36). The hosts won 21 of 27 faceoffs, 17 of which were won by sophomore Tim Bruno (17-20). 

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, April 2 when they visit Farmingdale State for a Skyline Conference contest at 7:00 pm.
