McCann’s Late Winner Powers Men’s Lax Past New Paltz

Patchogue, NY| Tim McCann scored with 41 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team to a 5-4 win over New Paltz in a non-conference contest at Danzi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The win ensures SJC starts the season with a 1-0 record as the Hawks drop to 0-2 on the year.

McCann had seven shots in the game and added an assist on Jack Gilbride's first-quarter goal. Gilbride tallied twice and added an assist.

Michael Carere had a goal and an assist in his SJC debut, and Nik Allen caused a game-best four turnovers.

All-American keeper Andrew Brust was credited with 19 saves on 23 shots.

Goals from Richi Polizzi and Jack Gilbride (2) gave St. Joseph's a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but by the end of the third quarter the Hawks brought the game to within one goal (4-3).

Thomas Armetta scored 2:18 into the fourth to knot the game at four, and it wasn't until inside the final minute that a winner was found. In a man-up situation, McCann took a pass from Gilbride in front of goal and beat New Paltz's Ryan Steinhart.

SJC outshot New Paltz 51-33 and forced 13 turnovers to the Hawks' three. Gilbride led all players with 11 ground balls.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, March 9, when they visit Western Connecticut for a non-conference affair at 4:00 pm.
