Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Western Conn. on the Road

Danbury, CT| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team dropped a 20-6 decision to Western Conn. State in a non-conference contest in Danbury, CT on Thursday afternoon.

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 1-1 overall on the year as WestConn improves to 4-0.

Junior Jack Gilbride led SJC with two goals, an assist, and two ground balls. Junior Robert Lopez also tallied two goals in the game.

Freshman Nik Allen scooped up a team-best four ground balls, and sophomore Michael Carere won five of 13 faceoffs.

Senior Andrew Brust took the loss in goal but made 18 saves on 34 shots in 45 minutes of action. Sophomore Conor Van Dusen recorded one save on five shots in the fourth quarter.

WestConn opened the scoring 2:56 into the contest but Lopez's tally with 8:40 to play in the first quarter tied the score at one.

After taking a 3-1 lead into the second, WestConn scored eight times in the second and outscored SJC 5-1 in the third quarter to pull ahead 16-2.

Gilbride scored twice to open the fourth quarter, and later in the frame Lopez found his second marker and Carere got on the board with 5:46 to play.

SJC was outshot 59-28 and edged 19-8 on faceoffs. WestConn also held an advantage in ground balls (33-19).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, March 16, when they host SUNY Oswego for a non-conference contest at Danzi Stadium at 6:00 pm.
