Men’s Lax Falls to Top-Seeded Maritime in Skyline Semis

Throggs Neck, NY| The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's lacrosse team saw its 2022 season end on Wednesday with a 17-13 loss to top-seeded SUNY Maritime in the Skyline Conference semifinals. 

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 7-7 overall on the year as the Privateers improve to 10-7 and advance to the Skyline Conference final.

Wednesday's game marked the end of head coach Tom Rotanz's career at St. Joseph's. The legendary Long Island high school boys lacrosse coach was named the program's first-ever head coach in 2016 and recently announced his intention to retire at season's end. 

Michael Carere had three goals, one assist, and a game-high 13 ground balls. The sophomore also won 14 of 23 faceoffs.

Jack Gilbride went for two goals and two assists, and Tim McCann scored twice on seven shots.

Andrew Brust (L, 7-7) made 18 saves on 35 shots.

Maritime entered the half up 13-7 thanks in part by an eight-goal first quarter. Trailing 8-3 after the opening frame, SJLI went for four goals in the second quarter but was outscored 5-4.

Down 15-9 going into the fourth, St. Joseph's tallied four times in the final frame but eventually succumbed to a 17-13 defeat.

The Golden Eagles were outshot 59-35 in the contest but held a 20-14 advantage in faceoffs won.
