Men’s Soccer Loses to Mt. St. Mary in Overtime

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Mount St. Mary in a Skyline Conference contest at Danzi Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 3-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in Skyline play as the Knights improve to 6-5-1 and 5-1-1.

Mount St. Mary took the lead in just the second minute when Connor Doyle pounced on an SJC turnover and beat keeper Tyler Flaherty in the box.

Doyle tallied his second of the game in the 20th minute when he finished off a left-sided cross from Christopher Maggi in the box (2-0).

SJC cut the deficit in half (2-1) six minutes later when Justin Gracia finished off a sequence from the left side.

The Golden Eagles had a prime opportunity to draw the match level in the 60th minute when Sonny Farrell drew a penalty, but James Dacos had his spot kick stopped by Mt. St. Mary keeper Zach Decker.

The equalizer would come, though, via Diego Saravia, who took a pass in midfield and then curled a shot around Decker from the right side with just 1:11 to play in regulation.

The Knights found a winner 5:48 into the first overtime half when Maggi jumped on a loose ball in the box following a free kick. After a scrum, Maggi scored point blank.

Despite a sluggish start, SJC carried play for most of the match and outshot Mount St. Mary 16-14. The hosts also won eight corners to the Knights' six.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, October 16, when they host Manhattanville College for a Skyline Conference contest at Danzi Stadium at 3:00 pm.
