Men's Volleyball Opens Season with a Split

Hoboken, NJ| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team opened up the 2022 season with a 3-2 win over Lasell University before falling to Stevens Institute of Technology 3-0 in the nightcap.

SJCLI 3, Lassell 2

The Golden Eagles got out to an early lead with a 25-19 win in set one. The Lasers quickly responded with 25-23 and 25-20 wins in sets two and three before SJC knotted the match at two with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set. A tightly played fifth set saw Lasell leading 14-13, but a 3-0 run by the Golden Eagles closed out the set and secured the match win.

SJC's Paul Curaro finished with a match-best 22 kills and five service aces. Mark Williams added 15 kills with six digs.

Setter Clint Johnson dished 42 assists and Mark Jensen scooped a team-best 10 digs.

Brendan Joyce led the Lasers with a double-double of 18 kills and 10 digs. Theo Zaharewicz pitched in with 15 kills and a match-high 11 digs. Setter Jesus Garcia tossed 44 assists.

SJCLI 0, Stevens 3

The Golden Eagles were shut out in the second match of the day as the Ducks came away with 25-14, 25-17, and 25-14 wins in straight sets.

Curaro finished with a team-best eight digs with Williams pitching in with five. Setter Johnson recorded 16 assists and four digs.

The Ducks were led by Percy Bickford with 13 kills while hitting 52.6%. Jack Fyda and Connor Feulner added seven kills apiece and combined for 11 digs. Setter Louden Moran tossed 30 assists.

The Golden Eagles return to the Danzi Center on Friday, January 21 for their home opener against Eastern Nazarene College. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
