Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match on Saturday

When and Where:

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's volleyball team defeated SUNY Potsdam in a 3-0 sweep, prior to falling to #5 Vassar College in three sets in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon. 

Vs. SUNY Potsdam 

Records:

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 2-3, SUNY Potsdam, 1-6

Top performers:

  • Senior Tyler Anderson led the Golden Eagles and had a game-high 15 kills while adding one service ace, 10 digs, and four block assists 

  • Junior Mark Williams provided the Golden Eagles with 14 kills, two service aces, 12 digs, and three block assists 

  • Junior CJ Johnson had a game-high 42 assists, also recording two kills, six digs, and one block assist

  • Freshman Luke MacPherson added seven kills, eight digs, one service ace, and one block assist

  • Zaire Rogers led SUNY Potsdam with 14 kills and also added three digs

  • Cooper Colesante led the bears with 27 assists and recorded 11 digs 

How it happened:
  • The first set would see both teams scoring back and forth as St. Joseph's would pull away late defeating Potsdam 34-32 in a program record for points in a set

  • The second saw the Bears pull ahead early with a 2-5 lead until the Golden Eagles rallied scoring 10 unanswered points, which gave SJLI the momentum to take the second set 25-13

  • In the third set, St. Joseph's started strong with a 6-1 lead, soon after the Bears would rally to tie it up at 15

  • After the third set would be tied at 15 the Golden Eagles would go on a 10-4 scoring run closing out the set 25-19 and giving SJLI the 3-0 series win

Vs. #5 Vassar College

Records:

St. Joseph's (L.I.), 2-4, Vassar, 4-1

Top Performers:
  • Anderson again led the Golden Eagles with an eight-kill performance, also chipping in three digs, two block solos, and one service ace 

  • Williams also provided SJLI with five kills, to go along with three digs, one block assist, and one service ace 

  • Johnson produced another team-high 19 assists, with one block assist and one kill

  • A team-high six digs, four kills, and one service ace was provided by MacPherson

  • Adam Gulik and Andrew Guaragno led Vassar College with 13 and 12 kills, respectively 

  •  Andrew Kim also added 11 kills with four digs

How it happened
  • Both teams started the first set by scoring in bunches with the score 5-4 in favor of the Brewers, soon after the Brewers would go on a 10-2 scoring run that helped Vassar claim the first set

  • The second set saw the Golden Eagles holding their own until Vassar pulled away again on an 8-3 scoring, giving the Brewers a 20-14 lead and claiming the second set with a final score of 25-19 

  • SJLI would grab a 7-6 lead on Vassar College before the Brewers would go on an 11-2 scoring run, gaining a 17-9 lead over St. Joseph's and finishing the final set with a 25-16 victory 

Next up, the Golden Eagles travel to take on Drew University on Friday, February 3, at 7:00 pm.
