Softball Takes Two from Purchase on Sunday

Purchase, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team recorded a pair of victories, 16-2 and 11-3, in a road Skyline Conference doubleheader with Purchase College on Sunday afternoon.

SJC sweeps the four-game set played across Saturday and Sunday and improves to 4-0 overall on the season and 3-1 in Skyline play. The Panthers begin the year winless with 0-4 and 0-3 marks overall and in Skyline action.

Game 1: SJC 16, Purchase 2 (5 innings)
With a 5-0 lead heading into the third inning, SJC posted eight runs to pull ahead 13-0. Sophomore Emily Bazarewski (4-for-4, 1 RBI) started the scoring with a single to left field that sent senior Jenna Kreiling (1-for-1, 1 RBI) home.

After senior Aryana Caputo (0-for-2, 1 RBI) scored freshman Samantha Dimezza (2-for-4, 1 RBI) with a ground out to third, junior Jenna DeFina (2-for-2, 1 RBI) singled to second and scored Bazarewski. Junior Victoria Iavarone (2-for-5, 1 RBI), freshman Madison DiSalvo (1-for-4, 1 RBI), Kreiling and Dimezza would all go on to notch RBIs as well.

Bazarewski would score again in the fourth inning before DiPalo recorded the last two SJC runs of the contest in the fifth inning when she drove Bazarewski and senior Paige Csikortos (0-for-4) home with a two-RBI single to left.

Both of Purchase's runs came in the bottom of the fifth.

Patricia McGloin (2-0) started on the mound for SJC and picked up the victory in a complete-game effort. The junior struck out seven batters and allowed one earned run.

Game 2: SJC 11, Purchase 3 (6 innings)
For the first time in the four-game series, Purchase established a lead when Brianna Palermo (1-for-2, 3 RBI) homered to right field, giving the hosts an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. 

SJC found four runs in the second inning, the first of which came courtesy of Bazarewski's (1-for-4, 1 RBI) RBI single to left field. Iavarone (1-for-2, 2 RBI) capped the inning's scoring with a two-RBI single to right center (4-2).

The Golden Eagles added three more runs in the fourth inning (7-2) before Palermo, via a ground out, scored Jaiya Hewitt (1-for-2) to bring one back for the Panthers (7-3).

In the sixth inning, DiSalvo (1-for-3, 1 RBI) and Dimezza (2-for-4, 1 RBI) scored off an error by the Purchase right fielder before senior Lindsey McKenna (1-for-2, 2 RBI) wrapped the afternoon's scoring when her two-RBI single up the middle extended SJC's lead to eight runs (11-3). 

Freshman Veronica Coman (2-0) collected her second win in as many days with a complete-game effort. The hurler struck out four batters and allowed three earned runs.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, March 27 when they host the College of Mount St. Vincent for a Skyline Conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm. Live video and stats for both games will be available here at sjcgoldeneagles.com.
