Softball Splits with Mt. St. Vincent at Home

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader with the College of Mount St. Vincent, 5-4 and 13-5, at SJC Softball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The results see the Golden Eagles move to 5-1 overall on the year and 4-1 in conference play as the Dolphins begin the year with 1-1 marks.

Game 1: CMSV 5, SJC 4
The guests opened the scoring with a four-run second inning but SJC cut the deficit in half (4-2) in the third when senior Lindsay Ness (1-for-2, 3 RBIs) doubled to center field, scoring both freshman Lauren Crawford (2-for-4) and junior Jenna DeFina (2-for-3).

In the fifth inning, freshman Samantha Dimezza (0-for-4) brought another run back for the hosts when she scored off a wild pitch (4-3) before Ness tied the game, 4-4, when she scored Crawford again, this time with an RBI-single up the middle.

The Dolphins, though, would register the final run of the contest when Aimee Vega doubled to right center, scoring Kaitlin Cirillo (5-4), in the seventh.

Junior Patricia McGloin (2-1) pitched all seven innings, striking out four batters and allowing five runs in her first losing effort of the season.

Game 2: SJC 13, CMSV 5 (5 innings)
Mt. St. Vincent jumped out to an early lead once again, this time a five-run lead with three runs coming in the first and two more in the second inning. But behind a 10-run third inning, SJC not only erased the deficit but invoked the run rule in the fifth inning.

SJC's rampage in the third inning kicked off with freshman Madison DiSalvo's (1-for-2, 2 RBIs) two-RBI double to left center. Other highlights included Dimezza's (1-for-3, 1 RBI) RBI triple to center field and Crawford's (3-for-4, 4 RBIs) three-RBI triple through the left.

Up five runs in the fourth inning (10-5), SJC posted two more runs, the last of which came via Crawford's RBI single through the right side that scored DeFina (3-for-4, 1 RBI).

Freshman Julia Ruocchio (1-0) weathered an early storm to register her first-career victory in her collegiate debut. The hurler struck out two and allowed three earned runs in five innings.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Monday, March 29, when they complete a four-game set with the Dolphins at SJC Softball Stadium at 2:00 pm. Live stats and video for both contests available here at sjcgoldeneagles.com.
