Women's Basketball Topples Purchase 84-57; Best Season Start in Program History

Results:

The St. Joseph's University-New York (L.I.) women's basketball team earned an 84-57 Skyline Conference win at SUNY Purchase on Wednesday night. At 5-1 overall, 3-0 Skyline, the Golden Eagles are off to their best start in program history.

Top performers:
  • Graduate Julianna Knice led all players with 19 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the field, 5-for-6 from three-point range. She added four assists and a steal.

  • Sophomore Megan Spina was 7-for-9 from the floor and finished with 15 points and four rebounds.

  • Graduate Casey Travers  and senior Catherine Siounis added 11 points apiece 

  • Kendall Larsen led the Panthers with 17 with Kaylena Phagnasay turning in 15 points

How it happened:
  • After Larsen drained a three in the opening seconds, the Golden Eagles went on a 12-0 run over the following five minutes

  • SJLI went on to dominate the quarter finishing ahead 19-9

  • The visitors maintained momentum in the second frame and a three from junior Felicia Barreiros put St. Joseph's up by 19, 32-13, with 4:20 left in the half. The Panthers would close out the second with five unanswered points and went into the break trailing 37-22

  • The Golden Eagles exploded for 31 points while holding Purchase to just 12 in the third quarter including 11 from Knice and 10 from Spina to take a 68-34 advantage into the fourth

  • A bucket in the paint at the 6:48 mark from sophomore Hannah Greene gave SJLI their largest lead of the game, 78-36, and the Golden Eagles went on to cruise to an 84-57 win

Notes:
  • St. Joseph's shot 49.3% from the field while holding Purchase to 35.2%

  • The Golden Eagles went 11-for-22 from long distance with the Panthers finishing 7-for-29

  • The visitors finished with 45 rebounds with the hosts grabbing 31 and held a 30-16 advantage in the paint

  • SJLI's bench provided 23 points to Purchase's 15
