Women's Basketball Stopped by Manhattanville, 56-46

Results:

The St. Joseph's University-New York (L.I.) women's basketball team dropped their first Skyline Conference contest 56-46 at Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon.

Top performers:
  • Senior Lanyah Ford recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds while adding three assists

  • Sophomore Megan Spina also finished with 11 points and finished with eight boards

  • Graduate Casey Travers rounded out the top scorers with 10 points, six rebounds, and a game-best five assists 

  • Julianna Kascic led Manhattanville with a game-high 15 points and 17 rebounds

How it happened:
  • The Golden Eagles scored first and took their only lead of the game on a layup from Spina in the opening minute of play

  • The Valiants went on to drop in 13 unanswered points and closed out the first ahead 13-2

  • SJLI scored first again in the second quarter, but the Valiants held a 16-11 advantage in the frame and took a 29-13 lead into halftime

  • A Kasicic layup in the opening seconds of the third quarter gave Manhattanville their largest lead, 31-13, of the day

  • By the end of the quarter, the Golden Eagles cut their deficit in half and went into the final frame trailing 41-32

  • The fourth quarter saw both sides exchanging baskets before back-to-back layups from Ford and Spina brought St. Joseph's to within three, 47-44, with 3:24 left on the clock

  • But clutch free throw shooting from the Valiants in the final minutes of play secured the 56-46 win

Notes:
  • St. Joseph's shot 27.0% from the field with Manhattanville finishing slightly better at 29.6%

  • Golden Eagles held an 18-12 advantage in the paint and outrebounded the Valiants 52-46

  • MC's bench provided 15 points to SJLI's two
