Women's Lacrosse Holds on for 15-13 Win Over USMMA

Patchogue, NY| Senior Tori Staker recorded a season-best 11 points to guide the St, Joseph's College women's lacrosse team to a 15-13 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Danzi Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Eagles even out at 2-2 on the season and in Skyline play as the Mariners drop to 1-3 overall, 1-3 Skyline.

Staker finished with six goals and five assists while collecting five draws, four ground balls, and three turnovers in the conference victory. Freshman Alexa Cordingly recorded five goals of her own while sophomore Amanda Gennardo and sophomore Melissa Newman chipped in with two goals apiece.

Gennardo provided a game-high six draws with four ground balls. Freshman Sabrina Simonetti matched a game-best five ground balls with four draw controls.

Staker was first to score with a free position show at the 26:46 mark before USMMA's Meghan Malone answered with her first goal of the day. The two sides would exchange goals the entire first half with neither side able to distance themselves from the other and the Golden Eagles managed a slim 8-6 advantage at the break.

After Newman gave SJC their largest lead of the evening, 9-6, with a game less than a minute into the second frame, the Mariners scored back-to-back goals to inch within one, 9-8. Both sides went on to exchange goals once again before Staker and Cordingly both found the back of the net down the stretch giving the Golden Eagles a bit of breathing room, 15-12, with a little less than seven minutes on the clock. USMMA's Kaitlyn Latchaw converted her free position opportunity with 1:48 remaining, but SJC went on to win the final draw and maintain possession securing the 15-13 win.

Latchaw paced the Mariners with six goals on the night with five draws. Malone finished with three goals and Maddie Schimdt recorded a pair of goals and four draws.

SJC's Jillian Hummel recorded five saves with USMMA's Jessica Gamsjager finishing with 10.

The Golden Eagles return to Skyline action on Friday, April 16 when they travel to take on SUNY Purchase. Game time is slated for 5:30 pm.
