Women's Lacrosse Closes Regular Season with 12-7 Win Over Valiants

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College women's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 12-7 win over Manhattanville College at Danzi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season as the Valiants drop to 2-4.

Senior Tori Staker led all players with five goals six draw controls. Sophomore Melissa Newman added two goals and an assist. Freshman Alexa Cordingly also finished with two goals along with two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Freshman Sabrina Simionetti dished three assists and finished with three ground balls and two draw controls. Senior Alex Ehrhart recorded two groundballs on the defensive end while causing two turnovers.

Lara Keenan and Maura Kelly led the Valiants with two goals apiece with the latter finishing with four ground balls and a caused turnover.

After Manhattanville scored first when Hailey Destasio connected with Kelly, The Golden Eagles scored three unanswered goals to go ahead 3-1 with just over 18 minutes left in the half. After an exchange of goals, Manhattanville inched to within one, 4-3, but St. Joseph's closed out the half on a 4-0 run and went into the break leading 8-3.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead with back-to-back goals to open the second frame before the Valiants scored three straight to move the score to 10-6. Staker and Amanda Gennardo both scored on their free position opportunities pushing the score to 12-6. The Valiants managed to score one final time, but the Golden Eagles went on to cruise to the 12-7 win.

SJC's Jillian Hummel finished with a season-best 16 saves while Manhattanville's recorded eight.

The Golden Eagles will enter the Skyline Conference Championships as the No. 2 seed and will host No. 3 U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday, April 28.
